Sport sandals? I had no idea there was such a thing, but IT IS. Upon further review, it turns out that not all sandals are created equal (although I knew those $5 Old Navy flip flops were pretty bad). I’ve had the some old sandals for quite some time (10 years, now that I think about it. Wow.), so the opportunity to test and talk about Oofos was a blessing to my feet.
Mine arrived just in time for my trip to Niagara Falls! Sandals are kind of a big deal for a summer vacation. They aren’t a big deal in a corporate setting, I tried.
Now of course, Oofos sandals aren’t just for active people. Anyone can benefit from what they bring to the table. Below is some info from the website and my thoughts on what Oofos has to say:
ABSORBS MORE SHOCK THAN TRADITIONAL FOAMS
Athletic shoe foams are designed to “rebound” and propel you forward. Revolutionary OOfoam does the opposite, absorbing 37% more shock with every step than traditional footwear foam.
The “rebound” was definitely noticeable for me. I did seem to naturally “push off” a little more with my back foot while walking around. That’s been especially important for me since tearing my Achilles. I need to get that baby calf nursed back to health! The shock absorption is nice too, like landing on a cloud.
REDUCES STRESS ON SORE FEET, KNEES AND BACK
Your feet and joints take a pounding on hard surfaces. Slipping on OOFOS after a workout provides them with relief and a chance to recover.
I wore mine after most runs and they do feel nice after pounding the pavement. There’s definitely relief to be had. As far as recovery goes, that will remain to be seen with consistent use. I’m excited to find out. Some reviewers have even stated that there are benefits to wearing them BEFORE a workout. That’s fine with me. The longer my feet can stay comfortable, the better.
CRADLES YOUR ARCHES
Unlike flip-flops, the OOFOS patented footbed is designed with tremendous arch support to take the pressure off of ankles, knees and hips, as well as your lower back.
My Oofos sandals were an obvious improvement over my old stuff. Granted, my old stuff was in fact old, but still there’s a definite difference in quality. The sandals seem to hug the contours of my foot from heel to toe. That’s cradling, alright.
ENABLES MORE NATURAL MOTION
Biomechanically designed, OOFOS flex with both your foot and the ground. The soft, flexible OOfoam material enables your foot to articulate the way nature intended.
This goes along with my earlier comment about naturally “pushing off” a little more. Walking in Oofos feels like you’re utilizing every part of your foot, probably the way we were designed to.
• Soft, conforming toe post eliminates chafing
I like these little tidbits of info. I can vouch for the lack of chafing, but I haven’t had to shower or wash mine yet and did not test their ability to float haha.
On a sidenote, I do like businesses that contribute to good causes and Oofos is one of those businesses. From the Oofos website:
Duncan Finigan is a long time member of the OOFOS family and was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in October 2014. After Duncan’s diagnosis, it was an easy decision for us to choose breast cancer research as the cause that OOFOS would stand behind.
$10 of every pair of the Project Pink collection sold is donated to breast cancer treatment research at Dana-Farber. As one of the world’s leading cancer care centers, the Dana-Farber team works tirelessly to find a cure to help the millions around the world that are affected.
If the Project Pink collection isn’t your thing don’t worry, 3% of all sales purchased at Oofos.com go to Project Pink as well.
Overall, I do think that Oofos sandals are likely a step up from whatever you are currently wearing. I’ve already demoted my old sandals to the back of my car for any time that I might forget my pair of Oofos. There are certainly cheaper options out there, but in this instance there’s a good amount of value in what you pay for.
