This Week in Running – I Need a Plan

Hello friends! I hope you’re having an excellent weekend so far. I’ve been working to squeeze in miles for the last couple of weeks around what seems like nothing but BASEBALL, BASEBALL, BASEBALL! My son Charlie made his first all-star team and I really couldn’t be prouder of him. I’m assistant coaching and there is a ton of practice. A mom of one of his teammates said he bad the best attitude (always positive) and that made me prouder than anything he’s done on the field. 🙂

This is kind of a dream come true for me.

I’ve been starting to do more “quality” miles, where I’m kicking up the pace a bit. I’m starting to hate it less so that’s good, right? Twitter chose to have me run hill repeats the other day, so I STILL haven’t hit the track. I think I’ll do it Tuesday.

This is how I felt about those hill repeats.

Quick sidenote: Star Spangled Ding Dongs are delicious! Stick them in the fridge and you won’t regret it. I have a thing for low budget snack cakes. No, my coworkers and I definitely didn’t do any snickering or make any jokes about the silly name.

So, about this plan stuff… My commitment to run the Grand Slam at the Runner’s World Festival and Half Marathon in October is fast approaching. What’s the Grand Slam you ask? It’s 26.2 miles worth of running in just 3 days! I’ll be running a trail run, a 5k race, a 10k race, and a half marathon in one wild weekend. I’m still not sure how to get ready for that much action. We’ll see what I can come up with in the next couple of weeks. I’m open to suggestions. 🙂

  1. Given the total distance equals that of a marathon would using a marathon training plan be sufficient? You might not have the fastest times in the 5k or 10k, but if you’re just going for total completion of the event I’d say focus on the endurance and building up the miles. Including some long hilly runs wouldn’t hurt either 😉

    1. Marathon training would definitely be sufficient, I think. Honestly, I don’t want to do that.

I’m thinking I’ll train up for a fast half marathon and maybe a couple of times during the training cycle I’ll simulate that weekend.

      1. That could work, it’ll be an interesting experiment for sure!

On the topic of sweets, I allow myself on box of Tastykake spice krimpets when they come in the fall. Otherwise I won’t buy any Tastykakes because I have no self control with them. If I feel like indulging I raid my parents’ snack cupboard because there is always some “chemical sugar garbage” snacks in there 🙂

  2. I was always a fan of the Christmas tree cakes, although I hold back on eating that stuff anymore. Having a sweet tooth, I’ve been good at not eating so many sweet things lately (except the tiramisu I had at 10pm last night, which I realized – I don’t like tiramisu anymore).

  3. Why can’t I post a meme here?? Here’s the gist of it —
Britain: We need to raise your taxes.
USA: How about you suck our (Star Spangled Ding Dongs box)

No advice on how to train for that grand slam challenge though. Good luck!
