This Week in Canceled Races – Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Life Goes On…

Hello, everybody! It’s Sunday morning and unless you are living in a cave (which may be a great place to be), you know that things are NOT normal right now. Schools are closing, businesses are altering their normal operations and yes, races are being canceled.  Most of us don’t know quite what to think about all of this. There are certainly feelings of disappointment and yes, this all may be a bit on the side of being overly conservative..but then again it might not be.

As the races started being canceled one by one, Shamrock held on for a little while and I stayed hopeful. Eventually, the official word was sent out. Shamrock Weekend and the BibRave Pro Summit, were cancelled.

We had a big weekend planned! I was going to meet the BibRave Pros for the first time AND hang with some local AND “internet” friends. I was going to try and break 1:30! Of course, it feels shallow and whiny to complain about these things when there are people suffering with the virus in a much more significant way. I’m not looking for a pity party, but I think it’s ok to still feel sad about it.

One thing to remember is that the race directors are as disappointed as we are. They put a TON of effort into organizing these races and take great pride in a job well done. The folks of J&A Racing have done a great job over the years directing Shamrock. I won’t forget that. For 2020, here’s what’s happening…

  • Our packets are being sent out to us. I’m definitely still gonna wear the shirts. There are mixed opinions on wearing the gear for races you didn’t finish depending on who you ask, but I go with the “if you’ve run it before, the year is irrelevant” approach.
  • There’s a “virtual” option. We may not all be on the same course, but at least we get the sense of camaraderie. We need that at a time like this AND it meets the social distancing protocol!
  • You can defer until 2021, for an additional fee.

As for me, I’m going to try the virtual thing. I’m STILL going to try and break 1:30! I’m hoping to have a pacer team Kipchoge style. 🙂

None of us know when our next races will be. That’s ok. There isn’t much better social distancing than a long run, and the Coronavirus isn’t going to stop those. Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da, life goes on…

Tahoe…this was social distancing at its finest.

  1. Bummer on your chance to race, but good luck if you’re able to get a crew to pace with you for the virtual race! I normally say you have to “earn” a shirt to wear it, but cancelled events are another story. I have a shirt from a 5k that was cancelled.

  2. Oh and my dad is signed up for Pocono Marathon on May 17th in hopes of qualifying for Boston… at this point it’s still scheduled, fingers crossed some of this calms down so that he can run. It’ll be his 4th marathon and he’s never qualified for Boston.

  3. I’m impressed you’re still going for your goal time! I want to run the distances so I can wear the shirts but I don’t have the mental fortitude to push for a PR when there’s no official finish line. Good luck!!
