Post Achilles Surgery Week 21 – I’m Feeling like a Dog in Heat, Barred Indoors from the Summer Street.

Happy Friday! My post title comes from a song (of course) and if you can identify it, I’ll be your best friend. For real. I’ll make bracelets and everything. Maybe I’ll get one of those two piece heart necklaces and send you the other half.

The title is EXACTLY how I’m feeling these days. I feel great. My baby calf is still just that, but for the most part I feel normal. I can’t do all the things with my right side that I can with the left and it wears out sooner, but there are times I forget I’m hurt at all. I’m having to show a great deal of restraint. I’m holding back on my runs. I’m holding back when I play with the kids. Don’t get me wrong, running is harder than it was before I got hurt, but I have another gear that I haven’t tried yet.

Last weekend I ran a 5k (Girls on the Run) with my little buddy, Jillian. It was warm and muggy, so we suffered a bit. There were quite a few walk breaks followed by pep talks, but ultimately Jillian’s competitive nature took over and we finished strong. I had a lot of fun and it was nice to run a race just because with no agenda. I was proud of little JJ’s effort.

Before and after. I was going for doofus in the after. Mission accomplished!

I was able to run 4 miles on Monday and 4 more miles on Thursday this week. I get 2 more on Saturday for my first double digit week this year! I’m going to push the pace a little on this 2 miler. The general rule is not to change 2 things in the same run. That means if I add distance, don’t add speed or hills. Since I’m cutting back to 2 miles, I’m going to make them count. ๐Ÿ™‚

One awesome thing about this week is that I got some dry needling done on my hips/glutes at physical therapy. Yes, the needles are long. Yes, they hurt (but in a funny way). My PT reacted to how tight my hips were a few times while checking my “before” range of motion. The “after” range seemed quite a bit better. I was pretty sore for the rest of the day, but feel lots better today! I think I have some functional movement in the hips that I haven’t had in quite a while. I’m looking forward to seeing what improvements I might have in my running/exercise.

That’s it for this week. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. That’s my plan for sure!

Drinking a day time ale at night. REBEL.

  1. I’ve been wondering if dry needling might not help me. My leg continues to bug me and I’m anxious to find a solution. I imagine insurance doesn’t cover something like that?
