When I first received word that I could try out Fun Run Box, I was very excited. What runner wouldn’t want to receive a mystery box of running stuff in the mail? I love stuff, especially mystery stuff! What I didn’t know was how much more Fun Run Box can be outside of just a few goodies. Being part of Fun Run Box has a team aspect, as well as a social one. It can also be quite a motivator to do a little more as a runner. From the Fun Run Box website:

Fun Run Box is a running subscription box, and a running experience!  We will send you monthly running motivation, with fun themes, and you can choose to join team challenges. Get to know other Fun Run Boxers in our exclusive group, and cheer each other on. Use our fitness app to keep yourself on track with our monthly challenges.  From beginner to expert, Fun Run Box has motivation for everyone.

Created by runners, for runners!

Some fun stuff and some motivating stuff
The fun theme that I was a part of was called Oktoberfest. Definitely my kind of theme, it’s like they know me. There are several ways to get points by posting pics on social media showing you having some fun with your Fun Run Box items. I was on Team Doxie and we were up against two other teams. Many runners are competitive types, so I can tell you that plenty of people were trying to earn points for their teams. There was even a competition for a single winner for each category, with the winners receiving a gift card for Fun Run Box!

I really thought it was a good idea to have running challenges as well. To be honest, I was in the middle of my training for the Richmond marathon while particpating in Oktoberfest, so I didn’t use the challenges. I can certainly see them being an excellent motivator. It was really cool to have another community of runners to share with as well. When you suscribe to Fun Run Box, there is a Facebook group associated with your challenge and you can see the posts of others and interact with people. I’m a huge social butterfly and love seeing fun pictures and reading inspiring stories, so I was a big fan.

OK, let’s get to the stuff! My Oktoberfest Fun Run Box came with the following items: A really comfortable running shirt made by Greenlight Apparel, a HeadSweats trucker hat, a mini roller to work out the kinks on the go, some Jelly Belly beer flavored jelly beans, a 5 mile Dachs magnet, and a Regrained Honey Cinnamon IPA snack bar.

The HeadSweats Trucker Hat

I kid you not, this hat has become my favorite hat (and I own a TON of hats). It’s nice and cool on my head and it’s really comfortable. The back has the classic adjustable plastic strip so it’s easy to get it to fit just right. I have the bill bent just right as well, so it looks good too (at least I think so). It would be a nice hat to run in, but I don’t run in hats. I’d also feel terrible about getting this hat all stanked up with my run sweat.

The Greenlight Apparel Running Shirt
I’ve never owned any other apparel made by Greenlight, so this was a new product to me. It’s fairly typical as far as what you’d expect from a running shirt, but it’s on the thinner side which was nice for the summer heat that I was battling. The shirt was comfortable and soft and I report no chafing issues. I like the black and orange color scheme. I’ll definitely wear it for a Halloween run (if I don’t wear a costume).

The Regrained Honey Cinnamon IPA Bar

My expectations were low for this snack bar. To me, an IPA bar seemed like a gimmick. I brought it to work to eat when I was desperately hungry. Seriously though, this thing was DELICIOUS. I’m not sure about any sort of IPA flavor but the grains were yummy as was the honey-cinnamon flavor. It was somehow crunchy and chewy, which is a combo that I like. I was sad to only have one of these.

The Mini Roller

This is a good little roller if you’re in a pinch. I stuck mine in my gym bag in case I needed it after a workout. I needed it that day after the track. It’s not as good of a roller as my full size roller, but it’s better than no roller and it’s nice that it’s so portable. How did they know that I’d want a pink one?

The Jelly Belly Beer Flavored Jelly Beans

I’ve known of the existence of these jelly beans for a long time. Who hasn’t wondered what they taste like? I don’t have to wonder anymore. They don’t taste good. I can’t name a beer that they taste like, but if I had to choose I’d say they taste like a Michelob Ultra with a spoonful of sugar in it. I don’t recommend this product, but it’s a fun thing to try.

The 5 Mile Dachs Magnet

I used this magnet on my beer fridge to go along with my many other magnets and stickers. People liked to include the magnet in their pictures. I tried to think of a good reason to have the magnet and thought of one. I’m a big eater. When I’m training for a marathon, I can get away with eating a TON. When I’m not, I can’t. I plan to use the magnet as a reminder that I’m a runner trying to be my best and that sometimes means watching what I pull out of the fridge. Hopefully, when I see the magnet I’ll have some discipline.

Conclusion

I really think the Fun Run Box is a great idea. I liked most of the items that I received. I know the items vary, but I trust that Fun Run Box knows what they’re doing. I like the social part of the program. I like being part of a team. There’s a lot of motivaion involved with meeting the challenges and getting points. I’d recommend this product to anyone that likes receiving running stuff in the mail, is involved with social media and likes to meet other runners.

  1. I have heard of these runner boxes before! And you are right! What runners wouldn’t want a box full of runner things to try! Hah! The challenges are a great idea. So many runner’s social lives are centered around running anyway. I like the idea of receiving gear instead of food!
